Batman and Robin Costumes

Batman and Robin costumes are a great choice for Halloween or for any fancy dress event. You would be hard pressed to find anyone, whether adult or child, who does not recognise them immediately.

There are a few different varieties of Batman costume. Personally, I think the best looking is the Batman Dark Knight costume and, of course, Batgirl is great for women. If you like to be more colourful than the Dark Knight, Robin has a very colourful outfit.

A Batman History

Batman has been around since 1939 when he appeared in Detective Comics #27 in the story The Case of the Chemical Syndicate.  Robin didn’t join him until 1940 in Detective Comics #38 and sales of the comic promptly doubled. The comic Batman, dedicated to the dynamic duo, was launched after that. In the first issue his archenemies Joker and Catwoman appeared and have remained popular ever since.

Since then, the Batman comics have continued along with TV series and a very popular set of movies. A movie serial of Batman was released in 1943 by Columbia Pictures. This serial was re-released in the 1960s and inspired the Batman TV series starring Adam West and Burt Ward which started in 1966. Batman The Movie was also released in 1966 with Adam West and Burt Ward starring.

A short TV movie Batgirl was made in 1967 and Batman and Robin also appeared in the 1979 TV movie Legends of the Superheroes.

There has been a whole series of successful cinema movies:

Batman (1989) directed by Tim Burton. Michael Keaton as Batman, Jack Nicholson as the Joker.

Batman Returns (1992) directed by Tim Burton. Micheal Keaton as Batman, Danny Devito as the Penguin and Michelle Pfeiffer as Catwoman.

Batman Forever (1995) directed by Joel Schumacher. Val Kilmer as Batman and Chris O’Donnel as Robin, Tommy Lee Jones as Two-Face and Jim Carrey as the Riddler.

Batman and Robin (1997) directed by Joel Schumacher. George Clooney as Batman, Chris O’Dpnnel as Robin and Alicia Silverstone as Batgirl; Arnold Schwarzenegger as Mr. Freeze and Uma Thurman as Poison Ivy.

Batman Begins (2005) directed by Christopher Nolan. Christopher Bale as Batman, Cillian Murphy as the Scarecrow and Ken Watanabe as Ra’s Al Ghul.

The Dark Knight (2008) directed by Christopher Nolan. Christopher Bale as Batman, Heath ledger as the Joker and Aaron Eckhart as Two-Face.

There was also a Catwoman movie starring Halle Berry in 2004. Catwoman also makes a great costume. See our post devoted to Catwoman. Whichever costume you choose from the Batman comics and movies, I'm sure you'll have a lot of fun with it!
